At the Battle of Columbus in 1865, 34-year-old pharmacist John Stith Pemberton, fighting for the Confederate forces, sustained a severe slash across his chest delivered by the sabre of a Yankee soldier. After the war, the chronic pain from this wound and a host of other ailments led Pemberton, who had trained as a doctor, to dose himself with morphine. He soon became an addict.

In the 1870s, Pemberton, began hearing reports that cocaine could wean morphine addicts off their opioid crutch, a claim endorsed by no less a cocaine enthusiast than Sigmund Freud—though, ironically, it merely substituted one addiction for another. Meanwhile, weaker, botanical doses of cocaine were already widely consumed in popular leaf-infused drinks designed as energizing mood lifters.

One of the most popular of these concoctions was Vin Mariani, created in 1863 by Corsican chef Angelo Mariani. A glass of Vin Mariani would have contained at best a few milligrams of cocaine, perhaps a tenth or less of what’s present in a typical line of snorted cocaine.

Yet as it was delivered alongisde alcohol, the body metabolised the ethanol and cocaine into cocaethylene, which produces more euphoria than cocaine alone. Drinking a glass would have been like having a potent cup of coffee laced with a mood enhancer.

In 1880, Pemberton, was living in Atlanta, Georgia. With his interest in cocaine piqued, he copied Mariani’s idea and launched his own tonic combining coca leaves, caffeine-containing kola nuts and Bordeaux wine. Although Pemperton’s French Wine Coca sold well, it was a bad time to enter the alcoholic-drinks business: the Temperance movement was gaining steam, and in 1886 Atlanta declared itself a dry city.

With the sale of alcohol prohibited, people began switching from boozing in bars to slurping soft sugary drinks in soda shops, where ‘soda jerks’ would mix flavoured concentrate and carbonated water to order. Pemberton was quick to adapt to the newly dry era, and switched out the Bordeaux in his drink with a thick, sugary syrup flavoured with various citrus oils, spices and caramel.

With plans to sell this syrupy concentrate to soda shops, Pemberton needed to rebrand his new creation. Fortuitously, Pemberton’s business partner, Frank M. Robinson, had a neat suggestion: Coca-Cola, a play on the syrup’s two primary ingredients. Robinson even designed the iconic script logo instantly recognisable around the world today.

Coca-Cola was marketed by Pemberton as a “valuable brain tonic” with a plethora of health benefits. Promoted with a coupon entitling the owner to one free glass, it sold well in dry Atlanta. Pemberton, however, was in poor health and still in the grip of an expensive morphine addiction. Facing personal bankruptcy, he sold his fledgling brand to an Atlanta pharmacist called Asa Griggs Candler in 1888 for around $10 million in today’s money.

Pemberton died of stomach cancer shortly after selling. Candler, then thirty-six and later Mayor of Atlanta, soon turned Coca-Cola into a national favourite, and in 1903 stripped out any traces of cocaine from the drink, setting it on a path to becoming the most popular drink in the world.

The First World War introduced an unprecedented era of industrial slaughter. Alongside tanks and machine guns, the deployment of poison gases—silent killers like chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas—added the dread of a slow, agonizing death, famously immortalized in Wilfred Owen’s poem Dulce et Decorum Est.

When peace fell in 1918, the world remained haunted by the spectre of chemical warfare, leading to the Geneva Protocol of 1925 outlawing the use of poison gases in battle – but not precluding the production and stockpiling of these materials.

As Europe once again found itself sliding back toward total war in the late 1930s, there was a reasonable and widespread worry that the Protocol would be simply ignored. European countries hastily distributed millions of gas masks to their citizens.

It was in this climate of understandable fear that Walter Jaeger, a chemist working in neutral Switzerland, began work on a device to detect poison gases and alert those nearby to the danger.

Jaeger’s design was simple. He created a small air-filled chamber featuring a positively charged electrode plate at the top, a negative electrode plate on the bottom, and a tiny piece of radioactive material (radium-226) positioned between them.

As the radium spat out its radioactive alpha particles, they smashed into atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen floating in the chamber, knocking a negatively charged electron out of these atoms, and turning the previously neutral atoms into positively charged ions. In this set up with normal air in the chamber, the negative electrons would flow up toward the positive electrode plate while the positive would flow down, creating a measurable current between the two plates.

Jaeger thought that when poisonous gases entered this set up, they would bind to the ions present to create heavier molecules that, moving more slowly, would disrupt the established current. When he ran the test, however, the needle measuring the current didn’t budge. As he would later realise, the poison gases were just too small and light to have any measurable effect.

Frustrated at the failure, Jaeger sat back and lit up a cigarette. As the smoke wafted around the room and into his poison gas detector, Jaeger noticed the needle suddenly plummeted towards zero. Jaeger’s failed poison-gas detector was, in fact, a perfectly functional smoke detector.

The reason? While gases used for chemical warfare are generally small at the atomic and molecular level, cigarette smoke is not really a gas at all but an aerosol made of up of comparatively massive (though still microscopic) particles of soot and other substances. These bulkier particles mopped up the positive and negative ions, completely breaking the current between the two electrode plates.

Jaeger’s smoke-fuelled discovery did not immediately translate into the commercial smoke detectors we know today. It took decades of refinement by fellow Swiss engineers to make the design practical for everyday ceilings, but the core physics remained unchanged.

Nearly three decades after Jaeger’s accidental invention, the first domestic smoke detectors went on sale and soon became a ubiquitous life-saving device – one designed to defend against the horrors of total war but whose real potential was unlocked by a simple puff of peacetime cigarette smoke.

America in the 1950s was on the up. The economy was strong, birth rates were booming, and millions of homes were being built in newly created suburbs across the country. Within these homes filled with modern conveniences like TVs, washer-dryers, and built-in ovens, a new aesthetic suited to the age of the atom bomb and the space race emerged. The look was streamlined, vibrant, and futuristic.

Naturally, this new look demanded a canvas. Traditional, polite floral wallpapers—popular since the Victorian era—suddenly felt desperately old-fashioned. In their place, homeowners clamoured for abstract designs featuring geometric and ‘molecular’ motifs. Seeking to build on the appetite for more modern-looking wallpapers, in 1957 Swiss chemist Marc Chavannes and American engineer Alfred Fielding set out to create something truly novel that would appeal to the forward-looking Beat generation: three-dimensional embossed wallpaper.

To make their new 3D wallpaper, Chavannes and Fielding ran two pieces of plastic shower curtain through a heat-sealing machine. The process failed to produce the intended embossed design, instead creating an array of evenly spaced, hemispherical air pockets. As wallpaper, it was a disaster: aesthetically boring, strange to the touch, and a magnet for dust.

With the wallpaper idea dead in the water, Chavannes and Fielding tried to rebrand their creation as thermal insulation for greenhouses. This too was a doomed concept. Undeterred, in 1960 the dogged inventors founded the company Sealed Air to manufacture their so-far unsuccessful product, initially dubbed Air Cap.

The next year would prove to be a turning point for this fledgling venture. The catalyst was the recent launch of IBM’s 1401 mainframe, the first affordable, mass-produced business computer. To protect this much-hyped but fragile device during transport, IBM had three options: rolled-up newspaper, which was both ineffective and transferred ink onto the computer; messy wood shavings, which could get into the computer; or horse hair, which had similar drawbacks.

When Sealed Air marketer Frederick Bowers heard about IBM’s transportation concerns, he reached out to the company and pitched the idea of using Air Cap to safely cocoon their precious cargo. After a presentation in which Bowers dropped fragile, glass objects wrapped in Air Cap without breaking them, IBM signed on immediately.

Rebranded as Bubble Wrap, the clean, lightweight solution allowed many companies to finally ditch traditional, messy packaging materials. By the end of the 1960s, Sealed Air’s flagship product had generated millions of dollars in revenue on its way to becoming the global billion-dollar brand it is today.

County Wexford, Ireland, 1954. Sir Hugh Beaver is out on a shooting party in North Slob by the River Slaney. He lines up his sights on a golden plover. When Beaver, who serves as managing director of the Guinness Brewery, pulls the trigger and misses, he has a ready excuse: the golden plover is, after all, the fastest bird in Europe.

Beaver’s hosts on this bog disagree, claiming the red grouse holds that title. Carrying on the debate over drinks at Castlebridge House that evening, they pore over all the host’s books but cannot adjudicate between the competing claims. Beaver imagines that similar arguments must take place every night in the tens of thousands of pubs across Ireland and Britain.

Four years later, when Beaver is considering new promotional ideas, he is inspired by this episode to create a book full of facts and trivia to settle otherwise intractable disagreements. This Guinness-branded book will be given away free to pubs, whose patrons can, and will, peruse them as desired.

In November 1954, Beaver recruits famously eccentric twins Norris and Ross McWhirter to put the book together. The McWhirters run a fact-finding and statistics agency on Fleet Street in London and are widely known as capacious stores of trivia. Beaver creates the Guinness Superlatives subsidiary and sets the McWhirters up in a converted gymnasium.

For two-and-a-half intense months, the obsessive McWhirters work 90-hour weeks, never taking a day off, writing to scientists, historians, engineers, and experts in dozens of other areas of human knowledge as they confirm hundreds of facts and figures, cross-referencing everything manually.

In August 1955, the first 198-page edition of The Guinness Book of Records is published. (Its scope will later expand and it will be rebranded Guinness World Records.) The 1955 edition, published in a limited run of a few thousand, comes with a laminated, water-proof cover to protect against inevitable beer spillage as it’s consulted and passed around.

It proves to be an immediate hit. Landlords love it. Patrons ask for it, and sometimes steal it. There is, Beaver realises, a vast and untapped appetite for trivia, driven not just by vexatious disputes but by sheer curiosity and the inherent joy of discovering the biggest, the fastest, the oldest, the loudest – the most extreme in every conceivable category.

What started as Beaver’s marketing gimmick has turned out to be a commercial product in its own right. It goes on sale to the general public in October 1955 and by Christmas is the number-one bestselling book in Britain.

Updated annually by the McWhirters, Guinness World Records will go on to establish itself as a much-loved global brand. In an ironic twist, as the book outgrows it pub roots, it becomes its own subject matter: Guinness World Records, having sold more than 150 million copies, is today recognised as the best-selling copyrighted book of all time.

Bubonic plague arrived in the city of Caffa, a vital trading port on the Black Sea in modern-day Crimea, in 1346. Three years earlier, Mongols from the Golden Horde and led by Janibek Khan had laid siege to the city; now the fight for its soul had reached a stalemate.

Then disaster struck for the invaders: an outbreak of plague in the Mongol encampment outside Caffa. This was likely imported from Lake Issyk-Kul, a popular stopover on the Silk Road where there is evidence of an outbreak of bubonic plague a few years before.

In Khan’s military base, the plague was spread rapidly by fleas living on the rats scurrying around the unsanitary dwellings, decimating the Mongol forces. Facing defeat, Khan resorted to a truly revolting strategy: hurling the infected bodies of dead Mongols over the city walls of Caffa, dispersing the pestilence throughout its streets. Today Khan’s tactic is considered the first example of biological warfare.

As bodies piled up in Caffa, many terrified residents fled westward, carrying the plague with them to Constantinople and Sicily in 1347, and initiating the start of the European Black Death. Within a few short years, a third of the continent’s population would perish.

While the Black Death began winding down in 1353, outbreaks of plague remained common in the coming decades. With the trauma of mass death still a fresh memory, rulers began taking steps to protect public health - and preserve commercial activity.

In 1377, the Great Council of the merchant city-state of Ragusa, Dalmatia (now Dubrovnik, Croatia) issued a ruling that ships arriving at the city port would have to remain anchored at sea for 30 days (trentino), with no one allowed to leave or enter the vessels. Over the coming decades, the policy of trentino was adopted in many European ports.

Then, in 1448, the Venetian Senate extended trentino to 40 days (quaranta giorni). No one knows why the Venettians settled on this particular number of days. Some believe there was a biblical inspiration: the Great Flood, Jesus’ wandering in the wilderness and Moses’s visit to Mount Sinai all lasted 40 days, as does Lent. Others think it was simply a practical choice, a more effective way to curb the spread of the dreadful disease.

Whatever the rationale, the quaranta eventually morphed into the English word quarantine. Six centuries later, when COVID emerged from a wet market in Wuhan and the world ground to a halt as billions retreated inside their homes, we were just following in the desperate footsteps of the panicked Venetian politicians of 1448.

Fatal accidents on the increasingly congested streets of the capital were commonplace, and so policemen were drafted in to regulate traffic and prevent collisions. Recognising the limited visibility of a solitary policemen amidst the flurry of carriages, railway engineer John Peake Knight came up with a solution.

Peake’s invention was a 22-foot high variant on the already established lamppost, adapted to incorporate the signalling system deployed on Britain’s ever-growing rail network. At the very top sat a gas-powered lantern; attached just beneath were two mechanical arms. The tall, hollow iron pillar housed a mechanism that connected a lever at the base to both the lantern and the arms: pulling the lever one way caused the arms to rise into a horizontal position, while simultaneously rotating the lantern head; pushing the lever back to its start position reversed these actions.

During daylight hours, Peake’s contraption issued commands in exactly the same manner as signals on railway lines, via semaphore: arms raised in a horizontal position meant ‘halt’, while arms lowered at 45 degrees meant ‘go’.

After sundown, with the arms scarcely visible, the gas lamp would be lit, the flame burning inside a four-sided lantern featuring red glass plates on two opposing faces, and green plates on the others. With a yank of the lever, the lantern rotated 90 degrees, alternating between red and green in the direction of traffic.

The first of Peake’s “street semaphores” was put up on 9 December 1868 at one of the most dangerous intersections in London, a junction just outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster that had recently seen a policeman killed, and two MPs hit and badly injured, by speeding horse carriages.

The street semaphore, operated by a police officer, had a mixed debut. While some road users got the hang of it quickly, others did not. London’s newspapers were likewise split over this new feature in Parliament Square. Then, just a month after it had been installed, the gas powering the lights ignited and the pillar exploded, its hapless operator receiving severe facial burns.

Despite Peake’s optimism that his street semaphores would rapidly spread around the city, plans to use them more widely were dropped immediately. But Peake had unleashed the idea of using lights to regulate road traffic. Forty years later, with the advent of the petrol-powered car, his street semaphore would return to London, minus the mechanical arms, as the electrically powered traffic light.

On 30 November 1939, three months after Germany started the Second World War by invading Poland, the USSR – then an ally of the Third Reich – launched a surprise attack on its neighbour Finland.

The Winter War, as the three months of fighting that followed become known, began with a ground invasion by the Red Army, a huge airstrike along the border region, and another targeting Helsinki that killed nearly 100 civilians on the first day.

International condemnation was swift. In response, Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov took to state radio absurdly claiming that Soviet forces on the ground were in fact liberating the Finns, their planes dropping parcels of humanitarian aid to help starving Finnish workers.

Piercing this preposterous propaganda with sarcasm, the Finns began calling the falling bombs “Molotov’s picnic baskets”. But beyond the jokes, disaster loomed. As the ‘Winter War’ proceeded, more than half a million Red Army troops, many in tanks, swarmed into Finland, which had at best 300,000 soldiers, mostly reservists.

The Finns also lacked anti-tank weaponry. So they improvised, taking inspiration from homemade incendiary devices used to great effect by anti-Fascists in the recently concluded Spanish Civil War: vodka bottles half-filled with alcohol or petrol, thickened with tar or soap, and capped off with a cork and rag, itself soaked in flammable liquid and lit moments prior to launch.

Soon a running joke developed among the Finns: if the ‘liberating’ Red Army was arriving alongside Molotov’s picnics, they would be welcomed with an accompanying ‘drink’. With characteristic dark humour dubbed their flaming vodka bottles “Molotov cocktails”.

These explosive cocktails were delivered to marauding tanks at close quarters by extraordinarily brave fighters, clad in all white to blend in with the snow, who would ski up to the metal death machines, and lob the incendiary device.

Ideally, the cocktail would land near a vent where fresh air was sucked into the tank’s turret. The flaming liquid, drawn into the interior of the tank, would not only burn the soldiers alive, but also ignite rounds of ammunition stored inside, with gruesome effects.

Over the course of the Winter War, a team of 87 women and 5 men worked themselves to exhaustion hand-crafting more than 500,000 Molotov cocktails. Deftly delivered by the tank-bombers, this rudimentary weapon was able to bring down an estimated 350 Soviet tanks and other vehicles in total.

In the early stages of the Winter War, the ability to take out tanks with so simple and cheap a device was a enormous morale boost for the Finns, and a huge shock to the Soviets. But as time went on, the Soviets adapted their strategies, gained the upper hand, and eventually forced Finland into a negotiated peace in spring 1940.

Chances are you’ve owned a Slinky. I have, and over the past 80 years so too have some 300 million people. Today the Slinky is often included on Top 10 Toys of the 20^th Century lists.

The idea of the Slinky, however, emerged accidentally from some distinctly unplayful research. In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was developing new kinds of tension springs to stabilise sensitive instruments on warships, keeping them steady as the vessels traversed rough waves and ocean swells.

James had a number of prototype springs stacked on his desk when one day he knocked one off. Rather than just clanking to the floor and coming to rest, the spring did something surprising: it “stepped” down onto a stack of books, then again onto the floor, landing upright and recoiled.

James, intrigued by the unusual motion, set out to make a version that would delight people by “walking” down a flight of stairs. After 2 years and many experiments, he patented the original Slinky: 80 feet of spring wire coiled into 98 loops, sitting 2.5 inches high at rest.

James’s wife, Betty, immediately saw its potential as a children’s toy, and taking inspiration from its sinuous movement dubbed it the Slinky. Debuting their product at a Philadelphia department store in November 1945, the 400 they had with them sold out in 90 minutes.

The fad exploded. Within 2 years, more than 100 million Slinkys had been sold. Over the coming years the Slinky continued to sell, while Richard James became obsessed with a religious sect, finally leaving his wife and six children in 1960 to live with the group in Bolivia.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, if a doctor wanted to get a sense of how your heart or lungs were functioning they had two options. They would either place a hand on your chest to feel for any irregularities, or they would place their ear against the chest to listen directly.

In late 1816, a thirty-five-year-old French doctor by the name of Rene Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec was called to assess a young and somewhat overweight woman showing symptoms of heart disease. A hand on the chest, inaccurate at the best of times, was not going to be helpful, and due to the patient’s age and size Laënnec was too embarrassed to lay his head on her bosom.

Then inspiration struck. A few months earlier, while walking through the courtyard of the Louvre, Laënnec had witnessed two children sending messages along a length of wood by scratching one end with a pin, and listening to the transmitted sound emerging at the other. Remembering this moment, Laënnec rolled up a piece paper into a tight tube, placed one end against his patient’s chest, and put his ear to the other.

With this simple diagnostic tool Laënnec could hear her heart more clearly than the standard methods ever allowed, and soon fashioned a more robust wooden version. The idea caught on, and soon other doctors were adding their own innovations.

First came more funnelled designs that offered enhanced acoustic properties, then, in 1851, the creation of a stethoscope with two rubber listening tubes, one delivering sound to each ear while blocking out external noise. Exactly 100 years later, cardiologist David Littman invented the modern, lightweight version of the stethoscope still in use today.
